Annuity Glossary and Frequently Asked Questions
Plain-language annuity definitions and practical answers about guarantees, liquidity, income, taxes, research requests and contract comparisons.

Annuity language is easier to use when each word is connected to a decision. A definition can explain the concept, but the issued contract controls the actual right or limitation. Keep a question mark beside any term that has not been explained in the contract you are reviewing.
Contract and ownership terms
- Premium: money paid into the contract. Confirm minimums, timing and whether later payments are allowed.
- Owner: the person or entity controlling contractual rights, subject to the applicable rules.
- Annuitant: the person whose life is used for relevant benefit calculations; not always the owner.
- Beneficiary: the recipient of an applicable death benefit under the designation and contract.
- Free-look period: a state- and contract-governed cancellation window after delivery. Ask how to exercise it and how a refund is calculated.
- Surrender period: the period during which a full exit or certain withdrawals can trigger surrender charges.
- Free-withdrawal amount: an allowance without a specified surrender charge. It is not automatically tax-free or exempt from rider reductions.
- Market value adjustment: a contractual adjustment that can increase or decrease an applicable early-withdrawal amount. See the actual formula and exemptions.
Value and crediting terms
- Account or accumulation value: the contract value after applicable crediting, charges and withdrawals.
- Cash surrender value: the amount available on a full surrender after applicable deductions and adjustments.
- Guarantee period: the period covered by a particular stated-rate guarantee; do not assume it equals every other contract period.
- Cap: a ceiling on credits under a specific index-crediting method and period.
- Participation rate: the share of a measured index movement used by the method’s formula.
- Spread or margin: an amount deducted under the formula’s specified order of operations.
- Renewal terms: the rules and permitted changes after a rate guarantee or measuring period ends.
Income and tax terms
- Annuitization: converting value into a chosen payment arrangement, often with significant limits on reversibility or cash access.
- Income rider: an optional benefit that can support specified withdrawals, subject to requirements and possible charges.
- Benefit base: a calculation reference; generally not unrestricted money available to surrender.
- Roll-up: a formula that may increase a benefit base during a defined deferral period; not automatically cash interest.
- Joint-life benefit: an income arrangement covering eligible lives under its survivor rules.
- Basis or investment in the contract: an applicable tax cost figure, not necessarily the current contract value.
- Section 1035 exchange: a type of eligible insurance-contract exchange with specific tax requirements, not a generic label for all retirement transfers.
Does “guaranteed” mean risk-free?
No. Identify what is guaranteed, by whom, for how long and under which conditions. Insurance guarantees depend on the issuing insurer and applicable contract rules. Liquidity restrictions, inflation, fees and taxes can still affect the result. A financial-strength rating is not a guarantee that an insurer cannot encounter difficulty.
Does an indexed annuity own stocks for me?
Not through the indexed crediting method itself. A fixed indexed annuity uses a contract formula linked to an index. The credit can differ substantially from the index’s published return. Other products with “indexed” in their names can carry different investment risks, so verify the product type.
Can I take money out whenever I want?
You may have withdrawal rights, but exercising them can have costs or benefit consequences. Check the surrender schedule, adjustments, interest-crediting rules and any rider. A waiver or free-withdrawal allowance is not a blanket answer to the tax treatment.
Is a lifetime withdrawal amount an interest rate?
No. Payments can include return of principal and can depend on covered lives and contractual conditions. A roll-up, a payment percentage and an accumulation credit are different calculations. Ask the professional to label every illustrated value and explain which one you can access.
Can I request a comparison without agreeing to a meeting?
Yes. Skyway’s existing personalized research request does not require an appointment or a commitment to buy. Educational inquiries are welcome from all 50 states. Licensing, appointments, required training and product availability are checked before regulated activity; this is not a claim of nationwide licensure.
What should I bring—and what should I keep out of a website form?
Bring your goals, general time horizon, need for access and a list of questions to an appropriate conversation. Do not put Social Security numbers, account credentials, tax returns, financial documents or exact account balances in the website’s forms. The Privacy Policy explains the existing contact and research process.
For the next step, choose a guide in Annuity Basics or a practical article in Skyway Insights. Compare current contract material when you move beyond general education.
General education, not individualized insurance, investment, legal or tax advice. Contract terms, state availability and insurer claims-paying ability matter. Licensing and appointments are verified before regulated activity. No return or product availability is promised.
